The diabetic eye exam is so important, most insurance companies pay for the yearly check for diabetic patients. The dilated eye exam is the most important part of the diabetic check. Your doctor will look at the back of the eye, at the retina, to assess the presence or absence of diabetic eye disease. This information will be used to treat your eyes, if necessary, and to inform your primary medical doctor of how well-controlled your diabetes may be. Remember, good vision doesn’t rule out significant, vision-threatening eye disease, so if you’re diabetic, make sure you have your yearly check.
