We are frequently asked about the difference between medical and vision insurance.

Vision insurance plans like VSP and EyeMed, for example, are for routine vision care only. Routine vision exams are simplified eye examinations given for the purpose of checking for new eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions. Typically patients may only use their vision plan examination once every one to two years. Vision plans are appropriate only if there are no active eye problems and no history of eye diseases like cataracts, dry eye, glaucoma, or macular degeneration.

Medical insurance frequently covers a medical eye examination for problems including eye irritation or pain, eye redness, or decreased vision due to cataracts or any other medical conditions that are NOT covered by vision plans. During your visit with us, it may be necessary to perform an additional test called a refraction. This is the measurement that your doctor or technician takes to determine changes in your eyeglass prescription or, if you do not wear glasses, to see if they may now be required. This test is performed on your first visit with us, your annual visit, and anytime your vision drops significantly. Even though it is a vital test for the care of your eyes, the refraction is a non-covered service through Medicare, Tricare, and many other insurance plans. There is a fee for this test and you will be asked to pay for your refraction at the time of your visit.

In most cases, medical insurance and vision plan insurance CANNOT be used at the same visit. For patients electing to be fit for contact lenses, the fitting fee will vary by the type of contact lens being fit. Please call us for the most current information about any of these fees.

Financing

While most surgical procedures are covered by medical insurance (such as cataract surgery with a traditional lens implant), some procedures may not be fully covered or not covered at all (like LASIK).

If a person decides to have cataract surgery but wishes to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses afterwards by electing to have an advanced technology lens implant such as Symfony, Crystalens, Trulign®, or a Toric, insurance will pay for the basic part of the cataract surgery, but it will not cover the costs associated with the advanced lens implant upgrade.

We participate with CareCredit® which offers no-interest, as well as traditional extended payment plans, which can make advanced technology lens implant cataract surgery (and LASIK) surprisingly affordable.

For patients considering laser vision correction (like LASIK or PRK), these procedures may be tax-deductible. Consult with your accountant on this matter. Also, if you are still working and fortunate enough to work for a company that offers a “cafeteria” or “flex” plan, you can pay for your vision correction procedure using pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows you to put some of your wages into an account from which you can draw to pay medical expenses, including vision correction procedures. This is money you have earned but is not subject to state, federal, or social security taxes. Essentially, you end up paying less tax, and have more money to spend for yourself. In a similar fashion, money put aside in a Health Savings Account (HSA) allows you to use pre-tax dollars for your procedure. Ask your employer if either a FSA or HSA is available to you.
